The Christmas season is approaching, and what's an absolute must? That's right, a delicious braided yeast bread. Very sweet, but indescribably delicious, especially with butter. Just like Grandma used to make.


Ingredients

  • 750 g freshly ground flour
  • 125 g sugar
  • 1 cube of yeast
  • 375 ml lukewarm milk
  • 100 g butter
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs

preparation

  1. Sift the flour into a bowl. Dissolve the yeast in 3-4 tablespoons of lukewarm milk and 1 teaspoon of sugar, then pour this mixture into a small well in the flour. Lightly mix the yeast with a little flour. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for about 15 minutes.
  2. Cover the already risen yeast with flour, then add the remaining milk, butter, sugar, eggs and salt.
  3. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly. Knead with an electric mixer on the highest setting for about 5 minutes until a smooth dough is formed.
  4. Cover the dough again with a kitchen towel and let it rise until it has roughly doubled in size. This takes about 45 minutes.
  5. Place the dough on the work surface and knead briefly again. Divide into three strands and braid them.
  6. Brush with lukewarm milk, that gives a nice color!
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 200 °C (top/bottom heat) for approximately 20–30 minutes.
