Grinding with a grain mill: How to get the most out of your KoMo device

What can you grind?

As a general rule: Anything that is not oily or fatty and not moist is suitable for grinding. This means that nuts and oily seeds such as flaxseed, oats, or poppy seeds do not belong in a grain mill, but can easily be processed with our flaker and mixer.

When purchasing your grain for grinding, ensure it is cleaned to prevent damage to the grinding stones from residues such as small stones. Furthermore, you should only ever process dry grain. Damp grain could clog the grinding stones.

Tip: How to test the moisture content of the ground material

A simple test will help you check the moisture content of your milled material:

  • Place a grain on a smooth surface and press it down with a spoon.
  • Does the grain shatter? Perfect, it's dry enough.
  • Does it crumble like an oat flake? It's too moist and should be dried before processing.

What to do when uncertain?

If you are unsure whether your material is suitable for grinding, process a small amount first. Then unscrew the hopper and check if the grinding stones have remained clean. Should any clogging occur, you can easily clean the stones by grinding coarsely milled rice or cleaning them with a dry wire brush.

The right mill for your grinding needs

Not all mills are the same. Depending on the types of grain you want to process, you should choose the appropriate motor power. Our handy milling chart will help you make the right decision.
